The other day I was in the grocery store talking to my Pops on the phone... and as I hung up, I said, "okay... talk to you later Dad. LOVE YOU"... ya know.. the usual ending to a phone call with your parents. Suddenly, an older lady walks up to me and says, "I am so happy you talk to your father on the phone, and with such great respect."
First thought... BUSINESS!! This lady was ear hustlin'! Then she proceeded to say, "I'm 55 years old, and my parents are 88 and 89. I still call them and still respect them. And guess what... if they wanted to they would STILL whoop me if I ever disrespected them!"
Caught my attention! WHY? ... Welp, besides her talking to me like we were friends, it was because I can soooo relate to her! Growing up as a Pacific Islander and having the parents I have, I grew up with the utmost respect for my elders and family. Things have changed... and the woman in the grocery store agreed. Kids can be sooo bratty with their parents... defying and lying to them, going to extremes in school, not calling them just to say HI! I'm not saying I was an angel child, but what I am saying is that I have never disrespected them!
Hang onto that respect with your parents, with your grandparents, with your elders. You may not agree with them all the time, but that doesn't give us the right to respect them any less.
After all, family is E V E R Y T H I N G!

This post is so very YOU and I love it!
Your love & respect for your family is very evident, girl. And I can definitely tell they mean THE WORLD to you! :)
PS...I can totally picture that older lady approaching you in the grocery store...that sounds like my Grandma lol
xo
I love her comment: 'if they wanted to they would STILL whoop me if I ever disrespected them!" LoL!
girl, preach!
It is so nice to see/hear a child be respectful to their parents. i LOATHE it when i hear kids talking back and being absolutely HORRENDOUS to parents. That did not fly in my household!
That's so hilarious that she said that! I agree though, I watch reality shows like Teen Mom (which, ok, I know they pick the worst of the worst for those things) but seriously if I EVER talked to my parents they way they do, I'd get whooped too!
It's so true. It breaks my heart when kids disrespect their parents/other adults. On the other hand, it breaks my heart when parents don't love/respect their kids. It is a bit of a two way street. :-)
I was raised to respect my parents and all elders as well. Growing up my friends even commented on it when they would come to my house. I hope my children are the same way!
I love my PI students. I had one beg me not to call home because he didn't want his Grandma to know what he had done. Ha!
